Amber Buckley Lyons Memorial Endowed Campership

Amber Buckley Lyons couldn’t wait to attend Mid-South Youth Camp… literally.  Before she even reached the minimum required age of nine, she begged her parents to let her go to camp and was allowed to attend at the age of only seven.  She didn’t cry to come home as her parents fully expected.  Instead, Amber brought home the highly-coveted "Best Camper" award for the week.  Over the years, Amber’s love of camp grew, and she would attend camp every single chance she got.  She did it all – she made the biggest splash, she won the egg-toss competition 4 years running, she crafted crafts that only a parent could love, and she cleaned her cabin from rafter to rafter  but most of all Amber sang.  Many nights she would sit on the side of the hill during the regular camp singing sessions and raise her hand to request her favorite song, "Mansions Over the Hilltop".  She must have requested that same ole’ song 100 times.

Mid-South Youth camp was a magical place for Amber.  However, as one of seven siblings, there were times in her life when it was financially impossible for her to go to camp.  During these difficult times, there were friends who helped out financially so that she could attend.  Their generosity came from a mutual love for a place where you can make new friends, execute the perfect goofy dive, and then lift your songs in praise . . . all in a single, perfect Summer’s day.

On November 19, 2015, Amber lost her five-year battle with cancer and has gone on to claim her very own Mansion Over the Hilltop.  Amber had so many cherished memories of camp, and she would want to pay it forward.  She would love knowing that future generations of children could experience the same joy that she did.

Because of her great love for Mid-South Youth Camp and her efforts to promote the camp and send campers there, the AMBER BUCKLEY LYONS MEMORIAL ENDOWED CAMPERSHIP has been established by her father, Dr. Dale Buckley and her husband, Mr. Bill Lyons, and is intended to be awarded to campers who would otherwise not be able to attend a week at Mid-South Youth Camp.  Awards shall be given out each year in increments of the amount equal to the cost of camp for one or more campers.
